but i can see the RP1 being a useful stepping-stone in that directionThere are not any RISC-V based SoCs that provide the performance and feature set we need for the SBC. Although who knows what will happen in the future.
the bulk of the IO users expect from an rpi is now packaged into a pcie device
so a suitable RISC-V SoC just needs enough general performance, hdmi, pcie, and maybe some codec accel
you can just slap an RP1 onto whatever SoC you find years down the road
