Troubleshooting • Re: Active cooler not working on Raspi 5

Hello there,

I just got a brand new Raspberry Pi 5 with active cooler with heat sink. The active cooler is plugged into the dedicated fan 4 pin connector. The pins and the cable look fine.
I installed a fresh version of Raspberry Pi OS (64bit) and set everything up.
The active cooler only spins for a second when booting. Then nothing.
I had the same problem with another raspberry pi 5 with the fan without heat sink and cannot think of anything else to try.
Here is my current status:
- Raspberry Pi 5 with latest Raspberry Pi OS (64bit)
- all updates including eeprom show me that I have the latest version installed
- under ls /sys/class/thermal/ I only see an entry for thermal_zone0 -> no cooling_device0

On my old device I tried putting in the parameters for the fan in /boot/firmware/config.txt, but as I had the same situation, that there was no cooling_device0, the parameters did nothing.

What do I need to do to get my active cooler running? I thought this was supposed to be plug and play :(

I am looking forward to any tips.

Best regards

Dennis
has your Pi ever reached a temp higher than 55°C? That's the first trip temperature to spin the fan up
